All that—and the chance to wear a cowboy hat for ...a few days without feeling utterly ridiculous. The weathered ranch town of Steamboat Springs, founded in 1876, is a few miles from the modern base village, and between the two there are dozens of restaurants, bars, condos, and lodges, all accessible by a free shuttle-bus system. July 25, 2017 At first, it looks like a statue. Driving from Colorado’s Hayden airport to Steamboat Springs, I’ve been lulled by the bright bluebird sky, and it would make sense if I were hallucinating. But the horse’s ear twitches. In the saddle ...is a man in a ski jacket and cowboy hat, and strapped to the horse’s back are skis. The man sees me staring, and he offers sage winter advice — at least for Steamboat Springs.
