Where to Stay in Telluride: Mountain Village, Town and Ski-In/Ski-Out Homes
Telluride gives you two very different places to wake up. The Town of Telluride sits on the valley floor at 8,750 feet, a historic mining town of Victorian storefronts along Colorado Avenue. Mountain Village sits up the ridge at 9,545 feet, built around the ski resort and home to most of the area's ski-in/ski-out addresses. A free gondola joins them in about 12 minutes.
Choosing between them shapes your whole stay. It decides how you get to the lifts each morning and where you walk to dinner. It also decides how much you'll want a car. Once you know how each side feels, the right base for your group usually becomes clear.

Here's how the two sides compare at a glance.
| Town of Telluride | Mountain Village | |
|---|---|---|
| Elevation | 8,750 feet | 9,545 feet |
| Setting | Historic and walkable, in the box canyon | Modern and more private, on the ski slopes |
| Ski access | Lift 7 from town, or the gondola to San Sophia | Lifts such as the Village Express, close to the core |
| Ski-in/ski-out homes | A few, at the base of the slopes near town | The majority |
| Evenings | Restaurants and nightlife on foot | Dining at Mountain Village Center |
| Getting between them | Free gondola, about 12 minutes (or about 20 minutes by car) | Free gondola, about 12 minutes (or about 20 minutes by car) |
Neither side is far from the other. Plenty of guests stay in one and spend their evenings in the other, riding the gondola back after dinner.
Staying in the Town of Telluride
Staying in the Town of Telluride
The town is the historic heart of the valley. Its Victorian buildings hold museums and boutique shops, and most of its restaurants and bars sit within a few blocks of each other. If you like to walk to dinner and wander home afterward, this is your side.
Town is also the natural base for festival season. Town Park, a short walk from Main Street, is the main festival ground, and staying nearby means you can come and go between sets. Our guide to things to do in Telluride covers the festival calendar season by season.
Skiers have two easy ways up the mountain. Lift 7 puts you on the mountain straight from town. The gondola leaves from the foot of Oak Street, and in winter, attendants load your skis for you.
Who Town Suits Best
Town tends to suit couples and groups who plan their days around dinner and live music. It also suits travelers who want the older character of the valley outside their door. Around town, the Galloping Goose bus runs frequent loops, so a car can often stay parked.
Staying in Mountain Village
Staying in Mountain Village
Mountain Village sits at the top of the gondola, directly on the slopes of Telluride Ski Resort and its 2,000 skiable acres. It feels more modern and more spacious than town, with a quieter, residential rhythm and homes spread across the mountainside.
The village core is called Mountain Village Center. It holds the gondola station along with a cluster of restaurants and shops. One more gondola stop, about three minutes on, brings you to Market Plaza, where you'll find a grocery store and Town Hall. In winter, the chondola links Mountain Village Center with the Meadows neighborhood.
Ski-In/Ski-Out Homes
Most of Telluride's ski-in/ski-out homes are in Mountain Village, set along the runs so you can click into your skis close to the door. Ski-in/ski-out access always depends on snow conditions and weather, and each home's page notes this. You can browse all of our ski-in/ski-out homes in Telluride.
See Forever Village
See Forever sits at the top of Mountain Village, with wide views across the San Juans. The See Forever Collection gathers 14 homes here, with ski-in/ski-out or walk-to-ski access and a ski valet to look after your gear. Private decks and hot tubs make the evenings easy. Shuttle and gondola access take you to the shops and restaurants below. Some See Forever homes also include access to the spa and pool at The Peaks Resort, and each home's page explains what is included.
Quieter Neighborhoods Beyond the Cores
Quieter Neighborhoods Beyond the Cores
For guests who'd like extra space and privacy, a handful of residential neighborhoods sit a short drive away, and here a car is part of the plan.
Ski Ranches
Ski Ranches is a residential neighborhood just outside Mountain Village, where you'll stay in a quiet residential setting among locals. Homes here are known for their mountain views, including Mount Wilson and Sunshine Peak. Mountain Village is about a 10-minute drive, and the Town of Telluride is about 20 minutes. Skiers can use ski valet parking in Mountain Village.
Aldasoro Ranch
Aldasoro Ranch is a neighborhood of secluded estates on the far side of the valley from the ski area. Town and Mountain Village are both a short drive away, so plan on a vehicle. For skiing, parking in Mountain Village is the easiest way onto the mountain.
Pandora
Pandora lies at the east end of the Telluride valley, just minutes from downtown. Homes here offer private settings with big mountain views, while dinner on Main Street stays close.
How the Gondola Ties It Together
How the Gondola Ties It Together
The Telluride gondola is what makes either choice easy. It's free to ride and runs from 6:30 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week, through its two seasons. It has four stations: Telluride at Oak Street, San Sophia at 10,540 feet, Mountain Village Center and Market Plaza.
The ride from town to Mountain Village Center takes about 12 minutes. That means a home in town is never far from the slopes, and a home on the mountain is never far from dinner. About half the cabins welcome dogs, and wheelchair-accessible cabins are available too.
Plan around the seasonal breaks. The summer season runs through October 25, 2026. Winter service starts November 20, 2026, and runs to April 4, 2027. Between seasons, the gondola closes for maintenance and a free bus takes its place. Our Telluride gondola rider's guide covers each station and riding with children in more detail.
Matching Your Base to Your Trip
Matching Your Base to Your Trip
Every group weighs things a little differently. These are the patterns that come up most often.
For a Ski Week
If skiing is the heart of the trip, Mountain Village makes mornings simple. Ski-in/ski-out homes put the snow at your door, and walk-to-ski homes in See Forever and the village core keep the lifts close. In town, a home near Lift 7 gives you a similar start with the restaurants of Main Street a stroll away.
For Festival Season
Town puts you within walking distance of Town Park and the festival crowds on Main Street. It's the easier choice when the music runs late and you'd rather walk home. Mountain Village works well too, as long as you plan around the gondola's midnight close.
For Privacy and Views
The quieter neighborhoods give you more room and calmer evenings, with a short drive to everything else. They suit families who like to cook at home and head out for one big outing a day.
Wherever you land, getting here is part of the plan. Telluride Regional Airport is 10 minutes from downtown and 15 minutes from Mountain Village. Our guide on how to get to Telluride covers flights and drive times from the nearest airports.
