Breckenridge, Colorado, sits at 9,600 feet above sea level. Denver, where most guests land, sits at 5,280 feet — a climb of nearly a mile and a half in the hour and a half to two hours it takes to drive between them. This is a significant change in altitude, made quickly, and it is worth understanding before you arrive so it stays a detail of the trip rather than the story of it.

Search for Breckenridge’s elevation and you will find more than one answer. Look the Breckenridge elevation up from three different sources and you may find three different answers. Wikipedia lists 9,728 feet. The town, the resort, and the CDC all use 9,600. Other sources cite 9,603. Each figure is accurate for what it measures — the difference simply reflects where, and how, the measurement was taken.

Breckenridge is not a point, it is a mountain town. Main Street runs at about 9,600 feet, and that is the benchmark almost everyone quotes because it is where visitors eat, sleep and walk around. But the town boundary extends well above Main Street. A home in Gold Flake or on Bald Mountain can sit several hundred feet higher, and Breckenridge Ski Resort climbs another 3,398 feet to top out at 12,998 feet. A single number is a convenience for a place with this much vertical range, not a precise description of it.
Which reference surface are you using
Elevations are measured against a vertical datum, a modelled surface standing in for sea level. The current US standard is NAVD88; older maps use NGVD29; a phone or a handheld GPS reports height above an ellipsoid, which is a different surface again and needs converting. Switching between them moves the answer by anywhere from a few inches to several feet. Add rounding and a century of transcription, and 9,600 becomes 9,603 becomes 9,728.
What this means in practice: use 9,600 feet. It is the figure the CDC uses when it names Breckenridge in its guidance on high-altitude travel, and it is close enough for every decision you will actually make. The precise orthometric height of a specific benchmark matters to surveyors. It will not change how you feel on Tuesday.

The air at altitude has the same proportion of oxygen as at sea level — what changes is pressure, so each breath delivers less of it. The body adjusts over the first few days by breathing faster, working the heart harder, and losing fluid.
The CDC estimates that about one in four visitors sleeping above 8,000 feet in Colorado will develop some acute mountain sickness. Breckenridge sits well above that threshold. The symptoms of acute mountain sickness resemble a hangover closely enough that they are often mistaken for one: headache is the most telling sign, usually alongside fatigue, low appetite, and mild nausea. It tends to appear two to twelve hours after arrival, often during or just after the first night. Most cases are mild and clear within one to three days.
Fitness offers no particular protection — guests in excellent condition sometimes push through the first day and feel it more, not less, as a result. A previous, symptom-free trip to Breckenridge is also no guarantee for the next one, though a history of altitude sickness does raise the likelihood of it recurring.

The Wilderness Medical Society advises against ascending to a sleeping elevation above roughly 9,000 feet in a single day, and once above that, gaining no more than about 1,650 feet of sleeping elevation per night.

A guest who flies in, drives up, and sleeps in Breckenridge that night has covered more than twice that elevation in a single afternoon. This is, in practice, what nearly every visitor does, and the large majority are fine. It is also why the first night is typically the hardest, and it points directly toward what helps.

Begin drinking more water a day or two out, and arrive well-rested. If you have a heart or lung condition, are pregnant, or have had altitude sickness before, speak to your own doctor before the trip. The CDC publishes risk categories and medication guidance, and that conversation belongs with a physician who knows your history, not with a travel article.
The day you arrive
The single most effective thing you can do is not arrive at 9,600 feet on the same day you fly. A night in Denver on the way up, or a first night somewhere lower in the valley, does more than any other measure on this list. If the schedule will not allow it, land early rather than late so your body gets some waking hours at altitude before it has to sleep at it.
Your first day
Drink more water than what seems necessary — the air is dry as well as thin, and you lose fluid just breathing. Alcohol is felt more strongly at altitude, so it’s beneficial to take it easy. Eat, even without much appetite. Plan the first day light: the gondola, Main Street, an easy walk. Save the fourteener, the mogul run and the long ride for day three.
If someone does feel it
Rest, fluids and an over-the-counter painkiller handle most mild cases, and time does the rest. The one rule worth remembering is directional: mild symptoms that are improving are ordinary, and symptoms that keep getting worse are not. Going down helps quickly and reliably, and even a modest descent can turn a bad night around. If someone becomes breathless at rest, confused, or unsteady on their feet, that is not ordinary altitude sickness and it needs medical attention rather than another night of waiting it out.
