SKI Magazine Readers Rank Telluride 5th Best in the West
The first round of results from SKI Magazine’s annual survey are out, and Telluride certainly felt the love from the publication’s readers. The irresistibly charming mountain town earned the number one spot for character, but anyone who’s walked the town’s iconic main drag wouldn’t be surprised by that.
The biggest accolade came when readers named it the overall 5th best ski resort in the west, which likely had something to do with the record snowfall during the 2016-2017 season. This marks a rise from a ranking of 8th overall in last year’s survey. Other celebratory rankings include:
Telluride seems to be doing everything right. The resort has continued to invest in snowmaking improvements and infrastructure, and this year will unveil a new terrain-based teaching facility and a magic carpet for beginners. It’s also introducing new grooming technology to its fleet to cut its carbon footprint and improve efficiency overall.
It’s this kind of commitment to skiers and boarders that’s driving the fervent devotion to this Colorado gem. Take one reader’s survey response, for example:
“Am I in The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe?” reflected the reader, “Because this is Gnarnia. Seriously, please scatter my ashes here when I die.”
The survey ranked the top 15 ski resorts in the West. Telluride was bested only by Snowmass at number 4 (ranking number 1 in Colorado), Whistler/Blackcomb in British Columbia, Sun Valley, Idaho, and Deer Valley, Utah, which took the top spot. Check out the full list of winners here.
If the Farmer’s Almanac is anything to go by, we can expect more great conditions for Telluride this season, so get your edges sharpened and boards waxed. 2017 opening day hits on Thanksgiving, November 23.
