Telluride Christmas: A Holiday Week in the Box Canyon
Picture the box canyon on a December night. Holiday lights trace Colorado Avenue, and a Christmas tree built from donated skis glows in Elks Park. Above town, gondola cabins glide between Telluride and Mountain Village, lit up against the dark mountainside.
Telluride’s holiday season opens downtown in early December, when the Ski Tree lights up on Noel Night, a Telluride tradition with late shopping and holiday cheer along Colorado Avenue. Ski instructors carry torches down the slopes on Christmas Eve. Fireworks burst over Mountain Village on New Year’s Eve. In between, your days can fill with skating and sleigh rides, and your evenings with long dinners by the fire.
Here’s how to spend the holiday week, day by day, with the 2026 dates that are already set. If your family can travel a little earlier, you’ll also find the early-December events that open Telluride’s holiday season.
Telluride and Mountain Village at Christmas
Telluride and Mountain Village at Christmas
Telluride is two places joined by one gondola. The historic town sits on the floor of the box canyon, where Victorian storefronts and holiday lights line Colorado Avenue. Mountain Village sits higher up the mountain, built around its plazas and the ski slopes.
The free Telluride gondola links the two in about 12 minutes, with four stations in all. For the 2026-27 season it runs from November 20 to April 4, daily from 6:30 am to midnight, with extended hours for some holidays and special events. That makes it easy to have dinner in town and fall asleep in Mountain Village, or the other way around, with the gondola as your ride home. Our Telluride gondola guide covers every station and the best times to ride.
Telluride Ski Resort traditionally aims to open around Thanksgiving, so the lifts are usually running by early December. How much terrain is open by the holiday depends on early-season snow, so check the resort’s snow report as your trip gets closer.

The Holiday Season Begins in Early December
The Holiday Season Begins in Early December
Telluride’s biggest holiday traditions arrive in the second week of December. These are relaxed days to visit. The lights are up on Colorado Avenue, and homes are often easier to book in early December.
Noel Night, December 9
Noel Night falls on Wednesday, December 9, from 5 to 9 pm, and it marks the official start of the holiday season downtown. The evening centers on the lighting of the Ski Tree in Elks Park. Residents donate the skis, and a star made of ski poles crowns the top. Local metalworker Anton Viditz-Ward built the Ski Tree in 2013, and it returns to Elks Park each winter. Many shops along Colorado Avenue stay open with holiday discounts, so it’s a festive night for gift shopping too.
WinterSing, December 11 to 13
The Telluride Choral Society performs its holiday concert, WinterSing!, from December 11 to 13 at Christ Church on Columbia Avenue. Performance times haven’t been posted yet, so check the event page as December gets closer.
Holiday Prelude, December 12 and 13
That same weekend, Mountain Village celebrates Holiday Prelude on December 12 and 13. The village is transformed into the North Pole. In past years the weekend has included visits with Santa in Heritage Plaza, skating and a tree lighting, all free. The 2026 program will be posted closer to the date.

Christmas Week, Day by Day
Christmas Week, Day by Day
Arrival Day: Settle In
Give your first afternoon to settling in. Telluride sits at high elevation, so an easy first day with plenty of water helps everyone feel their best. Once you’ve unpacked, ride the gondola into town at dusk. The cabins glide over the slopes as the lights come on below, and it’s your first look at the canyon lit for the holidays.
Christmas Eve on the Slopes
The Christmas Eve Torchlight Parade begins at 6:30 pm on Thursday, December 24. Instructors from the Telluride Ski and Snowboard School carry torches from the top of the gondola down toward town, and a line of light winds across the mountain. Find a spot in town with a view of the slope, and bring warm layers and something hot to drink.
Several of Telluride’s churches hold Christmas Eve services, including Christ Church on Columbia Avenue, which also hosts WinterSing. Check with each church for this year’s times, and arrive early, since services fill on Christmas Eve.
A Quiet Christmas Day
On Christmas morning, some families head out for a few runs together, and others stay in by the fire and save the slopes for the next day.
For Christmas dinner, reserve as early as you can. Restaurants that offer holiday menus fill quickly, and a table for a larger group is the first to go. Many families celebrate at home, where a private chef can cook the whole feast in your kitchen. Our guide to private chefs in Telluride and Vail shares the chefs our local team books most often.
Holiday Week in Town and Village
The days between Christmas and New Year’s bring Mountain Village to life. Last season, the holiday programming ran from December 26 to January 1. Highlights have included DJ skate parties at the Reflection Plaza rink, a towering ice sculpture in Heritage Plaza, nightly light-mapping shows on the Madeline building and free movie nights. Watch for the 2026 schedule in late fall.
Skating is easy to fit into any day. The Reflection Plaza rink in Mountain Village Center costs $15 a session with skates, or nothing at all if you bring your own. The Village Pond is free during daylight hours. Down in town, Hanley Ice Rink in Town Park hosted a free Pajama Skate and GLOW Skate last holiday season.
For an evening the whole family will remember, book a sleigh ride. The Telluride Tourism Board lists local outfitters for sleigh rides. Telluride Sleighs and Wagons takes guests by horse-drawn sleigh across the Aldasoro Ranch to dinner in a heated canvas tent, where the menu draws on Basque family recipes.
Back in town, the Sheridan Arts Foundation has filled the week after Christmas with its holiday concert series at the historic Sheridan Opera House in recent seasons. The concerts are the foundation’s annual fundraiser, and the 2026 lineup will appear on the Sheridan Opera House site.
New Year’s Eve, Two Ways
Telluride celebrates New Year’s Eve in both places, so you can choose the evening that suits your family.
In Mountain Village, the New Year’s Eve torchlight parade and fireworks begin at 6:30 pm on Thursday, December 31, with fireworks shortly after. The village core is the best place to watch. The early start suits families with younger children, who can be home and tucked in long before midnight.
In town, the night stays up later. Last year the Town of Telluride closed Colorado Avenue near the courthouse for a free street party, with a DJ, dancing, a countdown and fireworks at midnight. The gondola often runs later on holidays, so check its hours before you plan your ride home.
