Overview

Staying in Big Sky

Big Sky sits high in the Madison Range of southwest Montana, a mountain community that rewards time outdoors in every season. Our Big Sky luxury vacation rentals bring together six penthouses at the Summit Hotel and four condos at Snowcrest Lodge, both in Mountain Village at the base of Big Sky Resort, each privately owned and cared for by our local team, so the mountain, the river and Yellowstone are all wonderfully close.

Winter centers on Big Sky Resort, with 5,850 skiable acres, 4,350 vertical feet from the Lone Peak summit, and an average of 400 inches of snow a year. The Lone Peak Tram carries you to 11,166 feet in just under four minutes, and the Mountain Village base area at 7,500 feet keeps ski school, rentals and slopeside dining close at hand. Opening day for the 2026/27 season is November 25, 2026.

In summer, the Gallatin River runs through the canyon below town, a Blue Ribbon trout stream loved by fly fishers and rafters alike. Spend a morning on the water, an afternoon on the Arnold Palmer designed golf course, and an evening at a free concert in Town Center, where the community gathers through the warmer months.

Big Sky is also one of the most scenic gateways to Yellowstone National Park. West Yellowstone and the park's West Entrance are about 50 miles south on Highway 191, and Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport is about an hour north, with nonstop flights from across the country. A ski week or a summer stay pairs beautifully with a guided day in the park.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should I stay in Big Sky: Mountain Village or Town Center?

All of our Big Sky homes are in Mountain Village, which sits at the base of Big Sky Resort, at about 7,500 feet, with the lifts, ski school and slopeside dining a short walk away. Town Center, at about 6,250 feet, is the heart of the community, with shops, cafés, restaurants and the summer concert lawn, and the Meadow Village area nearby is home to the public golf course. Skyline's local bus service links Mountain Village with Town Center through the day, so dinner in town is always an easy trip.

Should I book a hotel or a vacation rental in Big Sky?

A vacation rental gives you more room to spread out, a full kitchen, your own living spaces and the privacy of a home. Our Big Sky luxury vacation rentals add what you would expect from a fine hotel: residences prepared to a five-star standard, a local team who looks after every detail, and a real person to call whenever you need one.

Are your Big Sky homes ski-in/ski-out?

Our penthouses at the Summit Hotel and our condos at Snowcrest Lodge are both ski-in/ski-out, set slopeside in Mountain Village steps from the lifts. Your advisor will gladly walk you through the ski access for each home before you book.

Do you have homes for larger groups?

Yes. Our five-bedroom Summit penthouses sleep 11 to 13 guests, and for larger parties we can often arrange neighboring penthouses or Snowcrest Lodge condos so everyone stays close. Speak with an advisor about your group size and dates.

Are your Big Sky condos pet-friendly?

Pet policies are set home by home. Your advisor can share which residences welcome dogs upon approval and what to expect before you arrive.

Where should we eat in Big Sky?

For a memorable evening on the mountain, Everett’s 8800 serves farm-to-table dinners at 8,800 feet on Andesite Mountain, reached by the Ramcharger 8 chairlift, with reservations opening 30 days ahead. Town Center offers a relaxed mix of restaurants, cafés and bars within an easy stroll of one another. Your advisor can reserve a table for you, or arrange a private chef to cook in your home.

What is there to do in Big Sky?

In winter, Big Sky Resort offers 5,850 skiable acres, 4,350 vertical feet and the Lone Peak Tram to the 11,166-foot summit, with Nordic skiing on the trails at Lone Mountain Ranch. In summer, the Gallatin River is a Blue Ribbon trout stream for fly fishing and whitewater rafting, Ousel Falls Trail is a favorite family hike, and the Arnold Palmer designed Big Sky Resort Golf Course is open to the public. Yellowstone National Park is an easy day trip in every season.

How high is Big Sky, and will the altitude affect me?

Town Center sits at about 6,250 feet, the Mountain Village base area at 7,500 feet, and Lone Peak tops out at 11,166 feet. Most guests feel only mild effects, if any. Drink plenty of water, go easy on alcohol for the first day or two, and ease into activity. Our guide to altitude sickness prevention has more tips.

How far is Big Sky from Yellowstone National Park?

Big Sky sits on U.S. Highway 191 between Bozeman and West Yellowstone. The town of West Yellowstone and the park's West Entrance are about 50 miles south, and the northwest corner of Yellowstone National Park is only about 15 miles away. Your advisor can arrange a private guided tour for a full day in the park.

When does the ski season start in Big Sky?

Big Sky Resort opens for the 2026/27 winter season on Wednesday, November 25, 2026. The resort is an Ikon Pass destination, and the Lone Peak Tram requires a separate add-on, so ask your advisor to arrange tickets before you arrive.

What is the weather like, and when is the best time to visit?

Winter brings an average of 400 inches of snow a year to Big Sky Resort, with cold, clear days that make the most of it. Summer is warm and green, ideal for fishing, hiking, golf and Yellowstone. Spring and fall are quieter seasons, lovely for wildlife and a more relaxed pace in town.

How do I get to Big Sky?

Fly into Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN), with nonstop service from cities including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Los Angeles, New York, Salt Lake City and Seattle. From there, Big Sky is about an hour's drive south on Highway 191 through the Gallatin Canyon. We would be happy to arrange a private transfer.
