Winter Olympic Contenders Head to Breckenridge Dec. 14
Every year, Breckenridge welcomes athletes from all over the world to take part in the Dew Tour ski and snowboard championships. But this year is bound to be something special you won’t want to miss.
The 2017 Breckenridge Dew Tour has been designated a U.S. Ski and Snowboard Olympic qualifying event for the 2018 Pyeongchang winter games. Athletes will be contending for only four spots for each discipline, which will include superpipe and slopestyle for both skiers and snowboarders. With so much at stake, we can expect incredible performances from the country’s top winter sports competitors.
Sochi gold medalist Jamie Anderson will be competing in the women’s snowboarding slopestyle competition, while on the men’s side, Chas Guldemond, who took 5th last Olympics, will hope to earn his spot on the team once again. As for slopestyle skiing, the men’s team that swept the podium in Sochi will be vying for the chance to do it again. Be sure to watch out for Nick Goepper and Gus Kenworthy in Breckenridge to see who will be returning to the Olympic games.
Other names to keep an eye on at the Breckenridge Dew Tour include:
This isn’t the first time Breckenridge and the Dew Tour have been honored with the opportunity to host an Olympic qualifying event. The 2014 Dew Tour Championships also helped assemble that year’s stellar team, and the success of that event prompted its return.
"After a successful run in 2014, it was a natural choice to partner with Dew Tour once again to be a part of our Olympic selection events," Tiger Shaw, President and CEO of U.S. Ski & Snowboard, said in a press release. "Both the Dew Tour and the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix are committed to putting on a world class event for all athletes and presenting our sports ahead of the 2018 Games."
You can find a complete event schedule here, but for what will likely be the standout performances, tune in on 12/15 for the slopestyle skiing and halfpipe snowboarding finals, and 12/16 for halfpipe skiing and slopestyle snowboarding finals.
